The slippery slope, or "they're coming to take my guns!!" argument. No, they're not. This is one of the big lies and just so annoying. Not one gun is being taken away from anybody, which is actually a problem for gun control advocates more than the people who are shouting about it. Let's review:
- universal background checks (see previous post)
- smaller clips
- more money for security in schools (what the NRA wanted until Obama proposed it)
- expanded protections and support regarding mental health
- registration
- extend and expand assault rifle ban - but if you have one you can keep it
Anybody see the infamous "jack-booted thugs" coming to take a gun? If there is a slope it is at the edge of a vast prairie, blocked by a fence and has hand and foot holds. I wish there was a slope - steep and greased. Let's make it simple:
- no short guns. As Lynyrd Skynyrd tells us (a lovely irony): "Handguns are made for killing, ain't no good for nothing else."
- one shot only. If you miss that deer, reload. If you miss again, the deer wins. It keeps the sport sporting.
Long barrels and no clips. Easy. And don't start with that "but rules like that wouldn't stop school shootings" crap. It would make it a hell of lot harder. It is just an extension of the "people who want to kill will find a way" and "guns don't kill people, people kill people" crap. The guns help! How about the attack in a Chinese school the same day as Newtown where the nut used a machete? 22 people injured - no deaths.
I know and respect many gun owners and have no interest in taking away their sporting weapons. They are respectful of nature and the law, keep their guns safely locked away and I'm pretty sure would be willing to register them. Which is fair and reasonable on both sides. But that would be expecting too much since outrageous and insane are more the tenor of the argument. Sheesh.
Next up, the 2nd amendment argument. My favorite.
